Being Humanitarians: Who Should We Donate To?

There are so many worthy organizations that are fighting to better our country and our world.  I have narrowed it down to some great choices for our students to vote on--we will donate the profits from our sales at this year's 2nd Grade Bazaar (Flea Market) to the winner of our poll.

Here is some information about each of the charities we will be choosing from:

World Wildlife Fund - fighting to protect endangered animals
American Red Cross: North Texas Region  - provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Coppell Humane Society  - a foster home organization that keeps the animals until they find their forever homes, no matter how long that takes
Ocean Conservancybrings people together to find solutions for our water planet, protecting the ocean and its wildlife for future generations

Students: click on the link below to visit our Today's Meet site, where you will share with your classmates which charity you think we should donate to, and why you think so.  We will then vote!

Hubble Telescope Discoveries

Many of our reading groups have been reading books about space, the moon, and other topics about our solar system.  Our "Seagulls" reading group just finished up a book on Space today, and since we read about the Hubble telescope, Mrs. O'Bryan researched online and found its official website!

This link will take you to the photo gallery for some AMAZING photos the Hubble has taken:

Please let your child explore the rest of the website if desired!  :)

Sock Puppets!

I accidentally came across this App on our iPads, and it is my new favorite!!  (Thanks to Rozena, who had me searching out Apps we could use to work on our writing!)

We had so much fun creating our own Sock Puppet shows about Needs vs. Wants on our iPads, and we even taught our Kinder Buddies how to do it!

In this project, each student independently chose his/her sock puppet characters, designed their "set" and performed the dialogue between both characters.  They only have 30 seconds to record, and if they mess up, they have to start all over, so you can imagine it can be a time-consuming process!  :)

I am including all the puppet shows that were finished; if your child's doesn't appear, please tell him/her to finish it during Daily 5 so I can upload it!

Enjoy it!

Trip to the Moon!

Yesterday we went on a Virtual Field Trip to the moon!  NASA has a great website that lets you "go back in time" to Apollo 10's launch and trip to the moon.  It shows real photos and videos of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and it simulates the rocket launch and the lunar module used in the landing.

It was very fun and exciting because we have been studying all about the moon in science, and we have even been reading all about the moon and outer space in our small reading groups!

Check it out by clicking the link below!

Showing What We Know With the iPad: Regrouping

A few weeks ago, we practiced our addition with regrouping by explaining the steps involved.   The students were asked to demonstrate their knowledge on the iPad App: Show Me, which records your voice and your drawing simultaneously.  I think you will be impressed to see the students' hard work and their awesome explanations!

NOTE: Not all students finished this activity or may have been absent...if they would like to create a video, tell them to remind me when they have free time.  I would love for every student to show off their "Show Me!" :)

Click the student's name to view their Show Me video...(In no particular order:)

Presidents' Day Song

On Friday, we visited with our Kinder Buddies, and Mrs. Neuman shared this song with us that she found on Pinterest!  We really enjoyed it and listened to it several times.  :)

It has a lot of good information about two of our most significant presidents, all set to a catchy tune!

Take a look/listen!
